EUCF 2007 – Ragnarok 5th in Europe

After a slow start Ragnarok managed to fight home a 5th place. Two initial losses, 16-14 against SOS and 15-11 against later winners Clapham, put us in a difficult position. The necessary win in order to advance from pool play then came against Freespeed, 15-12 for Ragnarok. The pre-quarter against Fire of London, a team that gave us a good beating at WCU 2006, looked difficult. Both our previous loss to them and their impressive display in a very tight 15-13 loss against Skogshyddan (a really entertaining hucking game) meant that we had to come up with something extraordinary. And we did. Our defense worked just perfect and we won 15-7 in what was probably our best game during the tournament.

The quarterfinal against Karhukopla (the villains from Donald Duck) was as tough and close as expected. Two very even teams. The lead changed 4 or 5 times in the game but nevertheless we definitely should have won. A good 2. half gave us a 13-11 lead in a game to 15. But fatal mistakes form our side meant that we gave the Finns 4 points in a row. We lost 15-13. Very, very disappointing.

Allthough we were very dissappointed af loosing this quarter we managed to put up a good display in the next game against Chevron winning 15-6. The game decided who was to play 5-6 placing game. They honestly didn’t seem as if they wanted to play. Last game was against SOS. And this time, thanks to a very determined Ragnarok in the 2. half, we won 15-11.

Dissappointing were our very slow start in this tournament and the way we lost our quarterfinal. Elevating were our pre-quarter display against Fire of London and our determination after the quarter final loss. I am personally very, very pleased that we chose to fight for that 5th place instead of giving up after a close quarter. Next year we’ll come back much stronger. That is for sure!
